The Frugal Musician and the Forrest Gump Chicken

Last week, Kroger had whole chickens for .59 a pound. Remarkable. I bought a few for the freezer and baked one for dinner along with a two pound bag of Melissa’s organic baby dutch potatoes I’d picked up for .99 (they had been $5.00).  I added a nice bunch of organic broccoli (also on markdown for a buck and I had a 50 cent coupon Kroger doubled).

After we had a lovely chicken dinner one night, I harvested the rest of the meat from the chicken and a couple nights later, we had chicken salad with organic celery (1.00 markdown) on rolls.

I boiled the bones of the chicken, harvested the tiny bits of meat still sticking to the bones and had a hearty chicken stew (leftover potatoes, broccoli and celery) with homemade dumplings.

At one point in the using it up process, I was reminded of Bubba from the movie Forrest Gump

“Anyway, like I was sayin’, shrimp is the fruit of the sea. You can barbecue it, boil it, broil it, bake it, saute it. Dey’s uh, shrimp-kabobs, shrimp creole, shrimp gumbo. Pan fried, deep fried, stir-fried. There’s pineapple shrimp, lemon shrimp, coconut shrimp, pepper shrimp, shrimp soup, shrimp stew, shrimp salad, shrimp and potatoes, shrimp burger, shrimp sandwich. That- that’s about it. ” -Bubba
