Sold two huge bunches of monkey grass today so side hustle weekend goes out with a whopping $35.00 in creative income!
I’m thinking of reinvesting part of this income into buying books at my local thrift mart and reselling on half.com. That little side hustle nets between $20-$60 per month.
And there’s a half price sale tomorrow which means I can get paperbacks for a quarter and hard bound books for fifty cents.
It would be fun to “reinvest” …frugal style of course!

Chatting with new neighbors, watching someone smile when you offered them something for free, watching children play, and buying lemonade from kids: priceless
The Frugal Musician presents the Side Hustle Weekend

I decided Thursday evening I would take Friday afternoon off work to “side hustle”. I love this term and it was brought to my attention lately by Jason at www.frugaldad.com. I encourage you to visit Jason’s site. He has great ideas, is not bogged down in percentages and investing and always has PRACTICAL advice that is easily implementable.
Our community yard sale is Saturday. I’ve cleaned closets again and found I had plenty of stuff to sell even after my 27 Things Project in May http://thefrugalmusician.wordpress.com/2009/05/30/the-frugal-musician-catches-up-on-27-things/.
Since the yard sale was this weekend, I also decided to dig my giant monkey grass (lirope, mondo grass) from the back garden. We have hundreds of mutant mondo grass clumps that seem to just get bigger and bigger. Even when I dig them and think they’re gone, they come back stronger and bigger than before. I’ve dug an entire circle up and am selling on www.craigslist.org for $15 a clump. A tiny sprig of mondo grass is usually at least $6-7 at Lowes.
I’m also continuing to make bags to sell at www.etsy.com. I started making these awhile back to give as gifts and discovered the creation of them was calm and meditative. I plan to open a store and sell on www.ETSY.com as soon as I have completed 20 bags. http://thefrugalmusician.wordpress.com/2009/06/19/the-frugal-musician-has-a-question/
So it’s all about the side hustle this weekend. I’ll see how much I can put in the ole purse and report on my progress next week.
Wish me luck!
The Frugal Musician has a side hustle

We are amazingly lucky. In 2007, we purchased a property that had been the home of a master gardener for many years. The couple who owned the home before us had small kids so the yard become overgrown in the 10 year interium between the master gardner and us.
Last spring, I would take a morning turn about my yard, coffee in hand, dumbfounded at the prolifieration of plants. Boyfriend’s mom visited and deemed we had a “million dollar yard”. Of course, she exagerated, but the little wheels in my head started clicking, particularly when I noticed how overgrown things were and how desperately little shoots struggled for a patch of ground.
I checked out library books and started identifying shoots, stems, buds and flowers. There were hosta, vinca, lirope, peony, iris, daylily, lemon balm, mint, varieties of daffodil, boxwoods, firethorn, juniper and helleborus plants a plenty.
I perused a few websites to see how much these plants were selling for.
Then I started digging. And selling.
Remarkably, I’ve made a nice little nest egg from my plant sales. In addition, I love the act of digging something up and selling it to make cash to buy veggie plants, fencing and other things for our lovely yard. Last year, I was able to sell enough plants to take a little vacation with my sister and mom.
Jason over at www.frugaldad.com calls this a ‘side hustle’. He suggests developing side hustles as extra income or a way to help payoff debt.
My side hustle is so satisfying, I’d like to eventually make it more than a side hustle.
